A rapist who assaulted a teenage girl was beaten up in a Dublin court by two men during sentencing and had to be taken for medical treatment.

The 46-year-old man was about to be sentenced at the Criminal Court of Justice in the Irish capital when two men approached the dock and attacked him, Irish outlet RTE reports.

He was left bleeding and had to be taken for medical treatment, while the two attackers were restrained and removed from the court room.

The prosecutor was telling the court about the abuse suffered by two girls at the hands of the accused when he was attacked.

The 46-year-old was convicted of several counts of sexual abuse in December last year, including sexual assault, aggravated sexual assault, oral rape, anal rape, vaginal rape and sexual exploitation against a teenage girl between 2019 and 2020.

The girl was first 15 and later 16 years old when the abuse occurred.

The man was further convicted of one count of causing a child to watch pornography in 2019, when the victim was between 14 and 15 years old.

Mr Justice Paul Burns said the ‘unacceptable’ attack constituted a ‘serious breach of security’ and it would be investigated.

One of the girls was reportedly present in court at the time of the attack and was ‘clearly traumatised’ by what happened, according to RTE.

He added that further measures to secure the safety of everyone at the court might have to be taken in the future.

‘I know emotions can rise high in Central Criminal Court cases but this is not an excuse for this type of behaviour,’ Mr Justice Burns said.

Sentencing was adjourned to continue later this month, on February 26, while the man remains in custody.
