Christian Brueckner whinges that the bread in his prison-food sandwiches is too thin and

Shameless Madeleine McCann suspect Christian Brueckner took time to complain about his food and lack of hot showers in a courtroom whinge as he faces unrelated rape charges in Germany.

Convicted rapist and paedophile Brueckner, 48, is currently serving seven years for raping an elderly America woman in Portugal’s Algarve in 2006.

He is now on trial again in Braunschweig, Germany, for a separate series of rapes and indecent assaults committed in the same area where then three-year-old Madeleine vanished in May 2007.

His lawyer Philipp Marquort told the hearing: ‘My client has not had a hot shower or a hot meal for three days. This is not acceptable.’

‘The last shower was on Tuesday morning. And regarding food – when he is here he gets just eight slices of the cheapest toast bread and there always two as a sandwich and one side is a very thin slice, slice of cheese and on the other side nothing,’ he lamented to the court.

Brueckner is currently serving his time in the isolation wing at Oldenburg high-security prison, 130 miles from Braunschweig but to avoid a lengthy commute on each court day, he instead he is housed at a prison in nearby Sehnde.

‘Yesterday when he got here, he was just left two smalls package of turkey sausage and no bread at all. That’s it. Each with just 250 calories,’ Mr Marquort told the court.

‘We demand that he gets a hot meal when he comes in here and that he should be allowed to get a hot shower, when he has one here it is cold.’

Mr Marquort concluded: ‘Our client asked us to complain, and we have been emailing this for ten months, everything the prison just provides him with bread and then we he gets back to prison after court he gets nothing at all.’

Trial judge Ute Insa Engemann told him she was ‘not responsible for showers and the food’ but she would ‘pass his observations on’.

Brueckner was sensationally named as the prime suspect in the ‘abduction and murder’ of Madeleine in June 2020 by German police but since then no charges have been brought against him.

Brueckner denies involvement in the disappearance.

He is currently serving a rape sentence in Oldenburg high-security prison, 217 kilometres away from Braunschweig.

To avoid a lengthy commute on each court day, he is currently being housed at a prison in Sehnde, near Braunschweig.

But here his defence team says he is given an unacceptably low amount and insufficient amount of food.

‘Our clients asked us to complain, and we have been emailing this for ten months, everything the prison just provides him with bread and then we he gets back to prison after court he gets nothing at all’ said Marquort.

Last year, the prime suspect in the Madeleine McCann case claimed he was being treated worse than Nazis on trial for war crimes in a rambling letter from prison.

In a letter from Oldenburg jail in Germany obtained by The Mirror, Brueckner moaned: ‘Not even (Joseph) Goebbels and his war crime fiends were isolated like me when they waited for the death penalty in Nuremberg prison.

‘It is against human rights to get isolated for such a long time… It is the right of prisoners to receive visitors – except for me.

‘All I see is my lawyer and the guards, they say if anyone else visits me I will get sexual satisfaction.’

Nazi propaganda chief and Holocaust architect Goebbels committed suicide in May 1945 before he could be captured by Allied forces.

Brueckner is now standing trial accused of raping a woman in Praia da Rocha in 2004, and abusing a teenage girl and a woman aged between 70 and 80 in Praia da Luz, where he lived, between December 2000 and June 2006.

He is also accused of exposing himself and masturbating in front of children on at least two occasions in Portugal, and insulting prison officers in Germany.

Earlier this week Irish former tour guide Hazel Behan, 40, told the court how she was tied up, whipped and brutally raped again and again by a masked perpetrator at her holiday apartment in Portugal in June 2004.

Ms Behan said she was convinced that her rapist was Christian Brückner because of his German accent and his piercing blue eyes which ‘bored into my skull’.

His current trial started in February and has heard from witnesses who say they saw Brueckner in harrowing sex tapes which showed the rape of an elderly woman and a young girl.

Brueckner’s defence have tried several times to have witnesses ruled out saying the case is unfair and prejudiced against their client because of the link to Madeleine but all attempts have so far failed.

The trial continues.
