Pro-Trump Republican Troy Nehls under Ethics Committee investigation for alleged campaign

  • Rep. Troy Nehls, R-Texas, is being investigated by the House Ethics Committee
  • Nehls quickly released a statement saying the probe is into his campaign’s finances and that he would be assist the committee in inquiry

Trump ally Rep. Troy Nehls is the subject of an ongoing investigation into alleged campaign finance violations by the House Ethics Committee.

The Texas Republican disclosed the ethics investigation is looking into his campaign’s funding, and maintained that he is being transparent with the committee.

‘I look forward to assisting the House Committee on Ethics inquiry into my campaign’s finances,’ he said in a statement.

‘My campaign has complied with every Federal Election Commission (FEC) law, and my books are open,’ he continued.

In the letter announcing the probe Tuesday, Ethics Committee Chair Michael Guest, R-Miss., and ranking member Susan Wild, D-Pa., wrote the committee has ‘jointly decided to extend the matter regarding Representative Troy E. Nehls.’

They said the matter was referred to them by the Office of Congressional Ethics on December 11, 2023.

The committee did not detail what Nehls is being investigated for, but did say that an update on the case would be announced by May 10.

The Office of Congressional Ethics is a nonpartisan, independent organization tasked with investigating wrongdoing by members of Congress and their staff.

They then can optionally refer matters to the committee when they see fit.

In the Committee’s announcement, Guest and Wild emphasized that Nehls has not been found guilty of any misconduct.

‘The Committee notes that the mere fact of a referral or an extension, and the mandatory disclosure of such an extension and the name of the subject of the matter, does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred, or reflect any judgment on behalf of the Committee,’ they wrote.

Before being elected to the House in 2020, Nehls previously worked as the sheriff of Fort Bend County, which sits on the south eastern outskirts of Houston.

The House Ethics Committee is the same body that investigated former Rep. George Santos before his removal from Congress in December.

In a report detailing Santos’ violations, the committee wrote: ‘Representative Santos sought to fraudulently exploit every aspect of his House candidacy for his own personal financial profit. He blatantly stole from his campaign.’

‘He deceived donors into providing what they thought were contributions to his campaign but were in fact payments for his personal benefit.’

After the report was released, the House voted to expel the fabulist.
