Fernandes denied by Strakosha

Fernandes slips the ball through the legs of Jensen before unleashing a strike on goal that is well saved by Strakosha.

United then make another substitute as Lindelof is replaced by Martial.

Amrabat booked for Brentford

Janelt is booked for bringing down Amrabat.

Moments later Maguire attempts to find Lindelof but Strakosha bravely meets him to catch but the clash leaves the debuting goalkeeper on requiring medical attention as the Bees prepare a double change.

Janelt and Wissa are subbed off to be replaced by Maupay and Onyeka.

Double change for the hosts

It’s a double change for United as Mount and Rashford make way for Garnacho and Antony who makes his first Premier League appearance since their defeat to Arsenal last month.

Rashford the creator for United

United have enjoyed a sustained spell of pressure here but again they are lacking a creative spark to really make something happen as Brentford continue to provide a threat on the counter.

Rashford again looks to create for the hosts but the attack is halted after Mount is adjudged to have committed a foul inside the box, offering Brentford a reprieve.

Dalot clears for the hosts

Norgaard has heads from close range after a long throw from Jensen.

Onana looks like he may have had it covered but Dalot takes no chances and clears well from inside the six-yard box.

Eriksen forces a save

Eriksen shoots from distance and forces a save from Strakosha who is unable to hang on but Collins steps in to clear and prevent Hojlund from following up.

United chase an equaliser

Fernandes has swtiched to a more central role after struggling to impact the game while deployed on the right flank throughout the first half.

Rashford drives forward for United and gives it to Mount but Dalot’s cross fails to go beyond the first man.

Norgaard booked for Brentford

Norgaard brings down Hojlund and the Brentford captain joins Hickey in the book.

United attempt to find their young striker from the resulting free-kick but Brentford defend well to put an end to the attack as they continue to frustrate the hosts.

SECOND HALF: Manchester United 0-1 Brentford

We’re back underway at Old Trafford as Man United attempt to fight their way back into this game after going behind on 26 minutes through an opener from Jensen.

Erik ten Hag makes a change during the interval as Eriksen comes on to face his former club in place of Casemiro.

United building momentum

Again Rashford demonstrates tricky feet as he drives in on Ajer, winning his side a free-kick on the edge of the area.

United have committed several players forward here.

Fernandes drives the ball into the box but Wissa is on hand to head clear before Pinnock twice clear from consecutive corners to repel the pressure.

Hojlund lunges in

Fernandes attempts to feed through an onrushing Hojlund but Brentford defend well to deny the Dane a shot on goal.

After losing the ball the summer arrival clumsily slides in on Wissa and he’s fortunate not to make contact as Brentford are awarded a free-kick.

Strakosha denies Rashford

United’s decision to continue playing out short from the back with Evans passing to Onana from goal kicks draws a series of jeers from the Old Trafford faithful but the goalkeeper’s long ball is more accurate this time.

United manage to unleash Rashford in the box and he displays some good footwork but his resulting strike is held by Strakosha at his near post.

Lindelof falls hard

Lindelof climbs over the top of Amrabat to head clear and the Swede looks in some pain as he lands but he is able to continue.

United are lacking in defensive depth so Ten Hag will no doubt be pleased that he is not forced into making an early change this afternoon.

GOAL Manchester United 0-1 Brentford (Mathias Jensen)

Wissa finds Jensen inside the box and the Dane squirms his strike beyond several defenders and past Onana to give the visitors the lead.

Onana gets a hand to it but he is unable to parry it away and United again find themselves in an enenviable situation at Old Trafford.

The goalkeeper may well feel he could have done better there.

Brentford again have a chance from a corner

Again Brentford manage to find Hickey in space from a corner.

The hosts are found unaware but the resulting strike leaves a lot to be desired.

Hojlund drops to the deck

Hojlund hits the deck after a clearance from Pinnock connects squarely with his face but the Dane is back to his feet shortly after.

United then have a chance after Lindelof connects with a stray ball but is unable to slip Hojlund through.

Hickey is booked

After receiving an early yellow in his club’s draw with Nottingham Forest last weekend Hickey again finds himself in the referee’s book early.

The defender looked to wrong foot Fernandes but the United captain was wise to the attempt and Hickey was forced to bring him down to prevent a break.

The yellow is Hickey’s fifth of the season and he will now miss Brentford’s next game through suspension.

Onana fails to find his target

Jensen clatters into Mount in the middle of the pitch and the referee awards a free-kick to the hosts.

Again the ball finds its way back to Onana but the Summer signing is unable direct his long pass to a teammate and it reaches his opposite number.

Hickey hits wide

Hickey attempts the first shot of the afternoon after finding himself in space on the edge of the penalty box from a corner but the Scotsman’s strike sails over the bar.

Meanwhile United are continuing their policy of playing the ball out from the back and immediately Brentord look to put pressure on Onana.

Strakosha involved early

Hojlund puts the debutant Strakosha under some early pressure but the Albania international is able to clear his lines with his first Premier League touch.

And we’re off!

The hosts get the action underway as Brentford chase their first win at Old Trafford since 1937.

We are now just five minutes away from kick-off at Old Trafford in a game that both Erik ten Hag and Thomas Frank will be desperate to win as they look to kick start their respective seasons.

Remember to stick around as we’ll have all the updates following kick-off right here.

Erik ten Hag admits his players are struggling to ‘survive’ when games go against them, but vowed that Manchester United will fight together to overcome the club’s worst start in 37 years.

Ten Hag accepted responsibility for the mentality of his players, admitting: ‘When decisive moments go against us, we lose a bit as a team.

Erik ten Hag on his side’s poor form

‘We always have to learn from the defeats.’ Ten Hag told Sky Sports.

But also take some positives. To encourage them, but also we have to acknowledge that we made some mistakes and you have to take to the next game.

‘But don’t forget all the things that we did well.’

‘I know he is not playing for Brentford, but I am Danish and I’m happy to see Danish players coming through and doing well,’ said Frank, whose side faces United today at Old Trafford.

Protest at Old Trafford

Though scrutiny on Erik ten Hag continues to increase with United so far yet to find their form on the pitch this season, United supporters have also maintained their discontent with the club behind the scenes.

Pictures from outside Old Trafford this afternoon show fans protesting the Glazer family’s ownership of their club, after speculation surrounding a potential takeover this summer reached a standstill.

Man United team news: Maguire starts!

Harry Maguire makes his first Premier League start of the season as he starts alongside Jonny Evans in the heart of United’s defence.

Brentford form guide

The surprise package in their first Premier League campaign after 74 years outside of the top flight, Thomas Frank’s side faced the difficult task of contiuining their momentum last season.

Succeeding where so many newly-promoted clubs have failed the Bees were unshaken in the sophemore season, going one better by finishing in the top half of the table thanks to a run of just one defeat in their final seven games.

Despite star striker Ivan Toney still unavailable through suspension, the club’s momentum appeated to have transfered into this season, at least initially.

A respectable draw with Spurs on the opening weekend was followed by a comprehensive 3-0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Since then however, victory has eluded the club.

Back-to-back draws with Crystal Palace and Bournemouth were followed by successive defeats to Newcastle and Everton, with the latter marking the Toffees first win of the season.

Having taken the lead against ten-man Nottingham Forest last weekend Brentford had a golden opportunity to secure three points but a Nicolas Dominguez equaliser meant they were forced to settle for just one.

Manchester United form guide

This afternoon’s hosts have endured yet another faltering start to the season under Erik ten Hag, and currently sit tenth after suffering four losses in their opening seven Premier League games.

It was Brentford in August of last year that heaped misery on the Dutchman in just his second competitive game in charge with goals from Josh Dasilva, Mathais Jensen, Ben Mee and Bryan Mbeumo leaving the club bottom of the league.

Despite the tumultous start to his tenure, Ten Hag’s side recovered well from that defeat, losing just one of their next ten fixtures in the league before going onto secure Champions League football.

This year however the team are still yet to really find their feet. A narrow opening weekend win over Wolves was followed by defeat to Spurs before victory over Nottingham Forest.

Since then though, the club have managed just three goals in four fixtures, with a win over newly-promoted Burnley their only win in September.

Defeat in Europe in midweek has only added to pressure on Ten Hag, and he will know just how crucial a victory today will be for morale.

Last five league games: W L L W L

After a career-best 30-goals in 2022-23, Rashford has scored just once in nine games so far this season, in a United side that have failed to live up to expectations.

The Red Devils sit 10th in the league after losing four of their opening seven games, while their hopes of reaching the Champions League knockout rounds have taken a dent after losing their opening two group games.
