A young man has died mid-air while bungee jumping over a ravine in Chile.

The 23-year-old took part in the thrill-seeking event over the Cajón del Maipo canyon near Santiago, but experienced health issues on the way down.

Tragedy stuck when he reportedly suffered a heart attack just moments after leaping off the platform.

The unnamed victim died mid-air and firefighters from San José de Maipo cut down his body from the bungee cord.

The young adventurer, who came from the city of Talca, was visiting the attraction with his mother and sister – outlets are claiming they watched the disaster unfold.

Public prosecutor Juan Cheuquiante arrived at the scene to gather information.

It remains unclear whether the man had an underlying health problem before taking part in the jump and an investigation into his death has been launched.

In December last year, a 56-year-old tourist collapsed and died after completing the world’s highest bungee jump in China.

The Japanese man was taken to Conde S. Januario Hospital in Macau, China after leaping off the Macau Tower.

Officials said he experienced shortness of breath and ended up losing consciousness shortly after the 764ft jump at 4.30pm.

Paramedics found he was not breathing and had no heartbeat when they arrived at the scene. He was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.

Meanwhile, a bungee jump gone wrong in Thailand saw a tourist’s bungee cord snap during a ten-storey jump, knocking him out as he plunged into the water below.

Witnesses caught the terrifying moment on camera as Mike, a man from Hong Kong, was pulled to safety after the elasticated rope he was attached to broke during a dive in Pattaya in February 2023.

He reportedly suffered injuries to the left side of his body, his chest and his lungs, and was taken by staff to a nearby hospital.

A Hong Kong-based news outlet that the activity park only compensated Mike for the cost of the bungee experience, and for the cost of the emergency outpatient service.
