David Cameron issues fresh message to US Congress as Foreign Secretary warns against

David Cameron has delivered a stark warning that Vladimir Putin will be ‘back for more’ in Moldova or the Baltics if Russia is not successfully challenged in Ukraine.

Speaking to the UN General Assembly, the Foreign Secretary issued a new plea for nations not to succumb to ‘fatigue’ in supporting Kyiv against Moscow‘s aggression.

In an address in New York on the eve of the two-year anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Lord Cameron stressed that Ukraine’s fight is ‘the world’s fight’.

It comes after the Foreign Secretary sparked a furious row with members of the US Congress when pleading with American politicians to approve new funds for Kyiv.

As he waded into a fierce battle in Washington DC over a fresh $60billion aid package for Ukraine, Lord Cameron compared a failure to approve the cash to the appeasement of Adolf Hitler in the 1930s.

He has since sought to cool tensions over his ‘undiplomatic’ intervention, which saw one Republican ally of ex-president Donald Trump tell him to ‘kiss my a**’.

But the Foreign Secretary reiterated his plea for Western allies to continue to stand by Ukraine in his New York speech today.

Lord Cameron warned ‘the lesson of this history is clear’, adding: ‘If we do not stand up to Putin, he will be back for more’

‘Two years on, I recognise some want to rethink,’ he told a UN General Assembly debate on Ukraine.

‘There is a sense of fatigue, there are other problems, a compromise might seem attractive. But this is wrong. We must recognise the cost of giving up.

‘Putin has said there will be no peace until Russia’s goals are achieved.’

Lord Cameron looked back to 2008 when Russian forces invaded South Ossetia in Georgia.

‘I said then that if we did not stand up to Putin, he would be back for more,’ the Foreign Secretary added.

‘In 2014, I was prime minister as his “little green men” seized control of Crimea. I said again that if we did not stand up to Putin, he would be back for more.

‘Now, having tried and failed to conquer all of Ukraine, the lesson of this history is clear. If we do not stand up to Putin, he will be back for more.’

Lord Cameron warned that if Mr Putin were to ‘eke out some kind of win’ in Ukraine then ‘the rest of the world would suffer too’.

‘What starts in Ukraine would not end there,’ he continued. ‘Putin could easily apply his distortions of history elsewhere, such as Moldova or the Baltic States.

‘And others will be emboldened to turn to fighting when it suits them. No country with a large, aggressive neighbour would be safe.’
