Martin Scorsese, 81, embraces his social media fame and admits TikTok is ‘kind of fun’

Martin Scorsese has been embracing his social media fame after delving into the world of TikTok when his daughter Francesca introduced him to it.

Surprisingly, the iconic Hollywood filmmaker, 81, admitted the platform is ‘kind of fun’ – after fans were left in stitches when his clips with Francesca, 24, went viral.

Despite being one of the busiest directors in the world, he found the time to catch up with the latest generation’s trend while juggling between his 10-time Academy nominated movie Killers Of The Flowers Moon, making documentaries and TV shows, producing other people’s movies and more.

The film legend proved he is as youthful and energetic as he could ever be, joining his daughter for a TikTok where he had to guess the meaning of modern slang words like ‘Ick’, ‘Slay’, ‘Sneaky link’, and more.

Talking to The Guardian, he said: ‘Apparently, I’ve been forced to engage with the TikToks. It’s kind of fun, actually.’

He continued: ‘There’s something about suddenly breaking through all this artifice of being properly interviewed or being presented in certain events, and suddenly there we are at home with the dogs all over the floor, in pyjamas and people laughing.’

When asked if TikTok clips required the same skills are filmmaking, he replied: ‘Yeah, exactly. Exactly. Exactly. And that’s something I can’t do. I would never be able to do a TikTok myself. I don’t, I don’t get the concept. Also I got other things to do.’

Yet the Taxi Driver director remarked the commercial has an ‘obligation to create something that makes its story clear’ while the TikTok content remains ‘all pretty enjoyable’.

Scorsese, who shares Francesca with his wife Helen Schermerhorn Morris, it’s all about embracing the youngest generations – and revealed becoming a dad at late age ‘teaches you a lot’ and teaches you ‘a great deal about love’.

He was nearly 60 when he welcomed Francesca, and added having children at that age it’s a ‘very different thing’.

The Hollywood alum also shares daughter Catherine, 58, from his first marriage with film producer Laraine Marie Brennan, and later on welcomed Domenica, 47, from his marriage with journalist Julia Cameron.

Scorsese and his youngest one recently teamed up to craft a Squarespace advert which was aired during Sunday night’s Super Bowl – as the moviemaker claims his daughter’s TikTok as just ‘as skilfully made’ as his movie epics.

Yet, TikTok is not the only platform he embraced – as the Goodfellas filmmaker is also among the most high profile users of the newest movie reviews app Letterboxd – where he boasts a cool 330,000 followers.

In November 2023, Scorsese created a list of ‘Companion Films’ – containing movies that share similar themes and inspirations.

The platform is called Letterboxd as a tribute to the founders’ love of widescreen films.

Letterboxing is when a widescreen movie is transferred to standard-width video formats while managing to preserve the original aspect ratio.

Last year, Francesca showed off a TikTok-themed cake as she and her famed father both celebrated birthdays in November.

Francesca has featured her father in numerous posts for her 166,300 TikTok followers, posted images from the birthday celebrations on her Instagram Stories.

The sheet cake the family celebrated with was adorned with cutout pictures of the father and daughter, as well as the TikTok logo and a decorative iPhone.

It also was decorated with the message, ‘Happy Birthday Marty Francesca,’ and contemporary phrases such as ‘We Slay Birthdays,’ ‘Slept On,’ ‘Throw Shade’ and ‘Tea.’

The cake had a ring of blue frosting around the bottom, as well as a figurine of a small dog.

In a separate shot captioned ‘Who let him cut the cake,’ Martin held a cake cutting knife while posed along the culinary creation.

The Departed moviemaker told the Los Angeles Times at the time that he has been ‘tricked into’ appearing in some of Francesca’s TikTok clips.

‘That was a trick,’ he said. ‘I didn’t know those things go viral. They say “viral.” I didn’t know.’

Scorsese said that Francesca has gotten him to unwittingly participate in the format’s movie bracket challenge, settling on Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey as a favorite selection.

‘That I didn’t know was going to go up,’ Scorsese said. ‘I was just doing it in the other room with her. I don’t know what they’re going to do.

‘They always have those iPhone cameras in their hands. You’re not aware. I honestly did not know she was going to post it … they use the words “post it,” right?’

A number of Francesca’s Instagram followers chimed in with birthday wishes for the director on a post in which she wrote, ‘Happy 81st Birthday, Dad.’
