Four children are burned to death in ‘arson attack’ inferno at Spanish apartment block days after ‘man was kicked out of flats for starting ground-floor fire’

Four children have been killed and several people have been injured in a fire at a four-storey apartment block in the Spanish city of Vigo.

Regional emergency responders confirmed this morning all of the people who had died in the tragedy were minors. It is not yet clear how old they were.

Eight people are said to have been taken to hospital.

The blaze broke out at about 4am this morning in the residential building, said to house five homes on each of its four storeys, in a neighbourhood called As Travesas.

A regional government-run emergency response coordination centre said in an initial tweet: ‘Several people have lost their lives and others have been injured by the flames.’

It said in a subsequent message posted on social media: ‘Four people have lost their lives, all minors.

‘Eight people were taken to different hospitals.

‘Psychologists who are specialists in major emergencies have been mobilised.’

Vigo’s mayor Abel Caballero is said to have headed to the scene.

The blaze has been brought under control and police forensics experts have cordoned off the building where the fire broke out so they can carry out an inspection when temperatures have cooled down.

Vigo is famous for its Christmas lights. Last year 11 million LED lights were installed in more than 400 of its streets.

A devastating fire at a nightclub in Murcia in south-east Spain in the early hours of October 1 claimed the lives of 13 people. The cause is still being investigated by police.
