Another 36 bank branches to close in latest blow to the high street

Four banks are to shut a total of 36 branches in the latest blow to the High Street – adding to the raft of closures seen over the last few years.

Lloyds Bank will shut 18 sites, with 15 Halifax branches going and two Bank of Scotland locations also being axed. The businesses are all part of Lloyds Banking Group.

The closures are taking place between January and September next year. One branch operated by NatWest is also being shut.

Like other lenders who have been closing sites, Lloyds said that visits to branches had been falling as more customers bank online.

However, campaigners argue that elderly and vulnerable account holders – some of whom struggle to use internet or app-based platforms – are being stranded.

Lloyds said the use of the 35 branches earmarked for closure had fallen by an average 54 per cent in the last five years.

The company said all the locations had a Post Office nearby.

Figures compiled by consumer group Which? show 662 branches were closed last year across the industry.
