The Baltimore Ravens‘ historic preseason winning streak was snapped by the Washington Commanders in the final seconds of Monday night’s game.

John Harbaugh’s team fell to a 29-28 defeat at the hands of Joey Slye’s successful 49-yard field goal in the final ten seconds of the game.

Most teams can easily brush off preseason losses, but when it was its first in eight years, this one will have stung more than most for Baltimore.

Sam Howell, who was still in middle school the last time the Baltimore Ravens lost a preseason game in 2015, threw for 188 yards and two touchdowns for the Commanders en route to their last-gasp win.

He was named the Commanders´ starting quarterback last Friday, and on Monday showed why Washington is putting its faith in the second-year passer in a crucial year for coach Ron Rivera and new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy.

Journeyman Ravens quarterback Josh Johnson matched him throw for throw in an exhilarating first half, at least by preseason standards.

Johnson finished 10 of 12 for 145 yards and two touchdowns, as well as one end zone interception where the ball fell through the arms of receiver James Proche II and into the waiting hands of Commanders defensive back Quan Martin.

Those missed points proved costly as Washington´s third-string QB, former Georgia standout Jake Fromm, led the team down the field for the game-winning field goal.

Slye kicked the ball through from 49 yards to win the game and end Baltimore´s streak.

The Ravens had written themselves into NFL lore with the streak the longest in the history of preseason, spanning all the way back to 2015, and had extended it to 24 the previous week with a 20-19 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles

But that all came to an end Monday night.

The last time Baltimore lost during the preseason was on September 3, 2015, in a 20-19 defeat to the Atlanta Falcons that ended with a failed two-point conversion.

The streak began with a 22-19 win over the Carolina Panthers. Ryan Mallett started the game under center and was the first of 14 quarterbacks to feature for Baltimore during the streak.

Among the others are franchise quarterbacks Joe Flacco, Lamar Jackson and Robert Griffin III.

Harbaugh had been at the helm for the entirety of the streak, since taking charge in 2008 and winning the Super Bowl in 2012.
